I have a confession to make: I'm 32 years old, and I eat snack bars that are marketed as toddler food.
I know it sounds crazy. But I received two Happy Tot "toddler bars" from Happy Family Brands--one Honey Grain Sunbutter, and one Mixed Berry Crunch--in my most recent gluten-free Conscious Box, and I thought, "Oh, what the heck? It's not like it'll hurt me to eat this." And so I tried them.
First things first: Yes, these bars are gluten-free. They're free of many other allergens, too--I didn't see any dairy, peanut or soy ingredients listed, for example. They come in four flavors--in addition to Mixed Berry Crunch and Honey Grain Sunbutter, they also come in Chocolate Sunbutter (which I haven't tried yet) and Apple & Kale Crisp (which I have tried). Nutritionally, they're not too bad--yes, there's a little sugar (7-8 grams per bar, depending on the flavor), but there's very little fat and a decent amount of fiber (1-3 grams, depending on flavor) for a small snack. And they're not too high in calories--the bars are 80-110 calories each. Simply put, you could do much, much worse.
In addition to being pretty healthy, these bars are also quite tasty. Honey Grain Sunbutter is flavorful, crispy, a little sticky, and almost Rice Krispie Treat-like. Mixed Berry Crunch is tart and fruity, and the yummy berry taste will linger long after you've finished the bar. Apple & Kale Crisp doesn't taste like there are any vegetables present even though there are--its flavor and slightly gooey texture reminds me a little of caramel apple. That flavor looks a little disconcerting at first--if you have kids old enough to speak, they may ask you what the heck that green stuff is in the bar--but once they taste it, they'll be hooked.
Even though these bars are marketed as toddler food, the size of the snack is not necessarily toddler-size--it's about the size of any other gluten-free snack bar I've found, and can be a delicious treat for people of any age. The bars come individually wrapped, 5 to a box, making them ideal for packing as a snack for car rides, tucking into a kid's lunch box, or, for adults, stashing in your desk at work or in your handbag. You can find them on Amazon.com or in the baby section of your local Target (they're $2.99 per box at Target).
These Happy Tot bars may be great toddler food, but they're also good for health-conscious adults who are young at heart and want a tasty little gluten-free treat.
