Many of my columns focus on our innate need to spend quality time with friends—how it’s the best way to beat stress, and about its mood-lifting effects. It is absolutely the best stress-management strategy out there. If you want to lift your mood and improve your life, make time to socialize. Better yet, socialize with an element of surprise, and perhaps even a bit of silliness thrown in for good measure. Get happy for free and never give up on fun.
Those crazy, energetic, and very fun-loving friends of mine decided to add some amusement to our latest birthday celebration by adding a theme to the evening—Mad Men! Costume and theme parties give you the chance to express your creative side. But better yet, costumes (or bouffant hairdos as the case may be) are a fun way to add humor, atmosphere, and that all-important element of surprise to an already great time.
When life gets too serious, being goofy can be a wonderful coping technique. Your problems won’t magically disappear, but connecting with your friends and enjoying yourself will lower your blood pressure and give a boost to your immune system. There’s a very good chance that you will cope a bit better with those things that cause you stress.
Like a great book, confessing your sins, owning a pet, or giving to charity, having fun is good for your soul.
