After covering thousands of mile by air and sea and struggling with wheelers, backpacks and tote bags, I finally found the perfect travel accessory at MAFIA Bags, an eco-friendly design and manufacturing company specializing in handmade backpacks, totes, bags and accessories made from recycled sails. It was a fortuitous find that happened as a result of a press release promoting the company that was founded in 2012 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and recently expanded into the U.S. with a San Francisco flagship outlet.
MAFIA is a family affair which was created by a brother-sister team, Marcos and Paz Mafia, who wanted to share their passion for nature, appreciation for living a simple life, and commitment to making a social impact with others. At just 25 years old, Marcos is an accomplished and award-winning professional kitesurfer who is grateful for all that life and the ocean have given him. MAFIA is his way of returning the favor to nature.
Happiness is having your laptop fit in your backpack
As part of its American debut, MAFIA is running a month-long Kickstarter campaign with specially-priced bags beginning at $60—which is what motivated me to order my gloriously light, attractive, blue, red and gray Discover Pack (which retails for $172 after the special campaign). The lightweight pack is made from recycled sails. I wasn’t 100% at first if it would fit my requirements: space for laptop (passed this with flying colors), cosmetics, warmth to wear on airplane plus comfy shoes to change into during flight. It worked, everything got in and I can carry it on my back comfortably.
If you looking for cool, earth-friendly bags, you really should check this company out while the sale is going on. Delivery of products ordered is September 2014. Also for any of you sailors out there, if you have a sail to donate the company is offering an ‘SOS’ (save on sails). It will repurpose your donation into MAFIA merchandise and you will score a free product made from your sail. For more about this and the company go to www.mafiabags.com or the MAFIA Kickstarter campaign.
