When it comes to the cured, pork delight of bacon, some people cannot get enough of it. There is something about this decadent bite of goodness that people crave. In the James Hotel in Chicago, Chef David Burke is bringing his culinary flair to all things bacon at the Burke's Bacon Bar.
Burke's Bacon Bar is a bacon-centered eatery. From small sandwiches to sweet treats, the menu is varied. Each dish features fresh, unexpected ingredients coupled with the innovative use of bacon. From classic favorites to modern twists, the featured component of bacon is highlighted is various applications. From jams to mousse, this restaurant is a bacon lovers dream.
Chef Burke said, “Wherever I travel, I’m always on the lookout for a classic sandwich shop. It has been a goal of mine to open my own space dedicated to the sandwich.” The focus of the restaurant's menu is the handwich, a delicious bite that fits in the palm of your hand. The menu features nine handwiches including Five Spice Duck (smoked duck, Chinese bacon, hoisin sauce, cucumber, cilantro, scallions on a steam bun, $.50 additional), the Big Kahuna Spamwich (BBQ spam, pineapple slaw, bacon crumbs, homemade pickles on a King’s Hawaiian bun), and the River North Bacon Dog (mustard, jalapeno bacon jam, onion, sports peppers, relish, celery salt, tomato on a soft bun).
The menu has other options as well. Sides, salads and desserts all reflect the bacon theme. Patrons looking for an accompaniment to their handwich could try some Crack Snacks (crispy tortilla strips with bacon and spices). While patrons looking for stand alone items like the Chopped Salad (romaine lettuce, carved bacon, tomato, cucumber, onion, carrot, avocado, buttermilk blue cheese ranch dressing) or Quinoa Salad (quinoa, grilled vegetables, fresh herbs) are a meal themselves.
Of course, no meal is complete without a sweet treat. Dessert options include variety of frozen yogurts or ice cream, Bacon Peanut Brittle and Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies.
