Is the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR AMG your dream car? Well, here's your chance to own one. Just don't ask for the Carfax.
Ferrari-Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR AMG for sale on AutoTrader, for a cool $1,490,000. Only 25 road-going examples of Mercedes' 2-time FIA GT Championship winning race car were built, and this particular car, chassis number 17, is also the only one of the 25 that was called the Super Sport, which means it has the larger 7.3L V12 engine from the Pagani Zonda and the SL73 AMG. So, if you've got an extra $1.5 million laying around to spend on a 200mph homologated street-legal race car, you'd think you wouldn't need to look any further.
However, caveat emptor definitely applies in this case. Exactly one year ago today, WorldCarFans spotted this car for sale by the same South-Florida-based exotic car dealership on another website. The next day, a little birdie apparently told them that this CLK-GTR AMG originated from Dubai, where it was heavily damaged during a storm. It was then sold as a salvaged car to someone in Switzerland who repaired it. From the pictures, it looks like they did a really good job. But anyone who's going to spend $1.5 million on a car is going to do their homework, and apparently this car's rap sheet is why no one has bought it a year later, especially since they're asking only about $60,000 less that when it was brand-new.
What do you think? If you had the money, would you buy this car, considering its history?
