This is a movie review for After Earth staring Will Smith and his son, Jaden. The movie is very impactful and has some spiritual undertones. Will Smith plays a high ranking military man and his son is in training while living on a foreign planet. The main part of the story takes place on Earth that was abandoned by people years ago. Their aircraft makes a crash landing on Earth. It is about survival on a planet that is not human friendly.
Will as the father, hurt during the crash, guides his son to retrieve a life saving device. He must face many perils like cold weather, killer animals, and an alien that arrived with them on Earth. The son, Kitau, is taught skills and techniques to overcome the obstacles to the goal. One of which is a calming technique, “taking a knee.” This technique has a spiritual resemblance to prayer to gain peaceful demeanor and understanding. This came in handy as He lost contact with the dad and had to make decisions on his own.
Another valuable lesson taught was about fear. Will speaks candidly about an experience during a life and death situation. “Fear is product of one’s imagination and what may happen in the future.” The thing imagined may not and normally does not happen. A situation may be dangerous, but it should not be feared.
God has said to believers in Jesus on several occasions to fear not or do not be afraid. He has exalted prayer i.e. taking a knee as a powerful resource. His Word declares, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”(2 Timothy 1:7)
Challenge: Believers, you may face situations even dangerous ones, but prayer is the key to staying in communication with the Father. He will navigate you through to the goal and give you peace. Remember, the Holy Spirit is the Helper.
