For Baby Boomers, refocusing retirement

A new book about retirement challenges Baby Boomers to focus -- and even refocus -- their attention on the things that are important to them.

The premise behind Al Kernek’s “How 50+ Baby Boomers Can Still Retire” ($14.95, available on Amazon) puts the emphasis on needs, not wants.

It’s not about amassing wealth and the biggest toys to play with in retirement. It challenges Baby Boomers to focus on the things that are important, he says, like family and friends.

“Although personal finances are discussed, it is not a financial planning document. Rather, the book focuses on practical options for comfortably retiring based on what assets and income you have left. Readers will discover that they can still enjoy a fulfilling retirement regardless of the financial destruction wrought by the Great Recession,” Kernek, owner and principal consultant for Pacifica Endeavors LLC, said in a statement.

There is lots and lots of retirement advice out there. And, given their propensity in the past for spending in the moment rather than saving for retirement, Baby Boomers can use all the advice they can get.

But there’s a practical element here. It’s not about retiring to a vineyard, or racing sports cars as a retirement hobby, it’s about the stuff that the average Baby Boomer Joe and Jane can achieve with some thought.

According to Kernek, the book urges Boomers to look at retirement in a new light, focusing on the things that are really important as they get older – good friends, family, health and fulfilling experiences.

It offers a variety of means to supplement retirement income. Practical ways to cut expenses without sacrificing the quality of everyday living are also presented.

As Kernek said, it shows older Boomers how to “make lemonade out of lemons.”
