Akindele triple secures MLS Player of the Week award
FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele’s hat trick performance sent him on his way to being named Major League Soccer Player of Week for Week 23 of the 2014 MLS season.
Akindele recorded the first three-goal match of his career in FC Dallas’ 5-0 road pounding of the San Jose Earthquakes on Aug. 16.
The rookie gave FC Dallas a 2-0 lead with his first goal in the 43rd minute. Dallas forward Fabian Castillo played the ball into Akindele outside the box, Akindele took a couple dribbles around the San Jose defence and pinged in a left-footed shot off the far post to beat San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Castillo and Akindele teamed up again in the 58th minute. Castillo made an impressive individual run down the right flank past the San Jose back four. Busch saved his shot but the rebound trickled right to Akindele who poked it in for the 3-0 lead.
Akindele completed his hat trick in the 87th minute when Dallas midfielder Michel sent in a perfectly placed corner kick to the head of forward Blas Perez, Busch made another save but pushed the rebound right to Akindele who blasted the ball into the top right corner.
FC Dallas returns to action on Aug. 22 when they host Real Salt Lake at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
