The Colorado Springs Police Department found a suspected car thief early Monday morning by following his footprints in the snow.

According to the department, at approximately 2:41 am, an officer was conducting routine patrol activities when he observed a stolen green Acura Integra traveling west on Tyler St. An attempt was made to get the driver to stop the car. However, the police lost track of the car on Centennial Blvd.

A short time later, the police reported, the vehicle was discovered, still running, on Windmill Av. Officers were able to follow footprints in the snow from the vehicle's driver's side door to 29-year-old Daniel Gaffke, who was walking down the road. Gaffke was arrested for motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding, the police department reported, and was scheduled for his first court appearance on Tuesday, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
