Footloose but not fancy free: Detached foot found on Jupiter Island

An unidentified woman walking along Peck Lake Beach on Jupiter Island, Fl., didn’t find any shells, but she did come up with a lone foot clad in a tube sock and white size 7-9 New Balance sneaker hidden beneath some sea grass on New Year’s Day.

According to local sheriff William Snyder, no other body parts were found, although they did locate the matching sneaker (sans foot) nearby. He also stated that the foot seemed to have been “naturally” dislocated from a decomposing body as there were no signs of “sawing or any other man-made trauma.”

Although his department followed up on a couple of leads, including a man who reportedly lost his foot during a boating accident, none proved to have any relationship to this particular body part. In fact, authorities have yet to determine whether the detached foot belongs to a man or a woman.

In the meantime, the local crime lab is running DNA tests to see if any identification can be made, though chances are slim, especially if the foot came off an undocumented refugee who tried to enter the country illegally.
