The New England Patriots and their fans face a revenge match of epic proportions against the New York Giants this coming Super Bowl Sunday. Fans across New England and the country will all be watching the game and the half time entertainment featuring Madonna.
Boston and New England fans especially will be glued to their TV sets, hearts in their throats, hoping for a big win from Tom Brady and the Patriots. Four years ago the Pats lost to the New York Giants after winning every other game they played that season.
What will New England football fans do the day after the Super Bowl?
After the beer coolers are emptied and the Vince Lombardi Trophy awarded, what then? Will a Sunday of football and snacking wear out Patriots fans? According to a survey by the Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated, “1.5 million employees may call in sick the day after the big game.”
Though this survey was conducted in 2008, the results may still be very relevant for Super Bowl 2012, according to the researchers. “If past history is any indicator, it is likely that a lot of folks will call in sick on the Monday after the big game,” said Joyce Maroney of The Workforce Institute at Kronos.
The survey also showed that another three percent of respondents, or an estimated 4.4 million employees, may get to work late. “We haven’t looked into whether folks call in sick more if their team wins or loses, and think that it probably has more to do with overindulgence in food and drink than with which team wins or loses,” said Maroney.
Interestingly enough, three percent of those surveyed said that they “previously called in sick to work the Monday after the Super Bowl. This may mean “that the number of employees who will call in sick may be significantly higher than the number who said they’ll be coming in next Monday,” according to the Workforce Institute.
Gen X and Gen Y predicted to have highest rates of absenteeism after Super Bowl Sunday
Additionally, those companies with a high percentage of Gen X and Gen Y employees could be "very short staffed." according to this survey. In fact, the study found that the “majority of employed adults who say they may call in sick the day after the Super Bowl are males and females between the ages of 18-34 years.”
