FoodSafety.gov answers salmonella egg recall questions. Which brands of eggs have been recalled? What are the symptoms of Salmonella Enteritidis? These are just some of the many questions consumers are asking about the nationwide egg recall that may be linked to at least 1,300 cases of salmonella.

With so much confusion relating to the egg recall the government is widely publicizing its website, Foodsafety.gov. The site is chock full of great information for anyone looking for egg safety tips,  salmonella symptoms or what brands of eggs are involved in the recall.

Which brands of eggs are involved in the recall?

Eggs that are potentially contaminated with Salmonella have been distributed under a number of brands. The Salmonella eggs are linked to two Iowa egg producers, Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg and distributed under the following brand names:

Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, Sunny Meadow, Country Eggs, the following brands are also involved in the egg recall: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, Kemps, James Farms, Glenview and Pacific Coast.

What are the symptoms of Salmonella Enteritidis?

Salmonella Enteritidis, can be on both the outside and inside of eggs, even if they appear to be normal. If the eggs are eaten raw or undercooked, it can cause illness. 

According to the CDC, A person infected with the Salmonella Enteritidis bacterium usually has fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated food or beverage. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without antibiotic treatment. However, the diarrhea can be severe, and the person may be ill enough to require hospitalization.

Purchase eggs locally

Avoid the brands that are being recalled and buy eggs locally. Consumers are looking for alternatives when it comes to eggs and they are now looking to buy locally from local farms and farmers markets. MSNBC reports that sales of eggs at farmers’ markets, co-operatives and roadside stands reportedly spiked over the weekend as news of the outbreak linked to at least 1,300 illnesses reached shoppers.
