Foods that promote sleep (Video)

Sleep does not come easy for many people, especially those suffering from insomnia. A lack of sleep affects the body in an unhealthy way. So, what is a natural remedy to ensure a good night’s rest? Food. Certain foods contain hormones that help induce sleep.

Sleep is important to the body, and a lack of sleep may produce health problems such as memory disturbances, heart problems, diseases, inflammation and weight gain to name a few. A good night’s sleep helps to improve the overall mood, increase alertness, reduce under eye circles and improve one’s overall appearance.

Some factors that contribute to insomnia are hormonal imbalances, unemployment, overdue bills, health issues, family issues and age related issues. These factors cause stress and worry that cause one to either stay awake all night long, or to wake up several times during the night. Both situations are unhealthy.

Certain foods containing sleep hormones can be used to help induce sleep. Melatonin and serotonin are known as the sleep hormones because their function is to promote sleep. Other essential minerals needed to promote sleep are zinc, magnesium and tryptophan- all of which are found in certain foods.

Foods that are high in selenium and zinc are raw nuts such as walnuts. Cherries, fresh, frozen or dried are rich in melatonin, and bananas are a good source of magnesium which is used by the body to release stress. Stress is a hindrance to a good night’s sleep.

Other foods that help promote sleep are pumpkin seeds, chocolate and milk. Pumpkin seeds have the highest amount of magnesium- 140 mg in a one ounce serving.. Both chocolate and milk contain tryptophan that produces serotonin which is used to elevate the mood. While it is not advisable to eat right before going to bed, these foods are easily digestible and should be taken one hour before bedtime for optimal results.

Wishing you a good night’s sleep. Stay fit & fabulous! Goodnight.
