Foods from Middle-Earth for JRR Tolkien's Birthday

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE, was born on January 3, 1892, in South Africa. As the first installment of the film version of "The Hobbit" takes the world - including Air New Zealand - by storm, it seems appropriate to cook a meal to celebrate. Although Warner Brothers has set up a website with a few recipes attached, I prefer to refer to Aunt Belladonna's Recipe Book.

This site, sponsored by The Tolkien Society, even includes gluten-free and vegan versions of some recipes. It includes snacks, mains, and desserts such as the Unexpected Raspberry Jam and Apple Tart which can be put together from items on hand.

If you want to develop further recipes, most of Middle-Earth was inspired by England, so you can look in British recipe books for recommendations. Some sites include entire menus with recipes, others simply discuss the less-obvious items. The Middle-Earth Food Blog contains links to scores of recipes that can keep you well-fed through first and second breakfast, and elevenses, and all the other meals.
