Food stamps are so prevalent today that you can even find them for sale on Craigslist. Yes, that’s right, you can turn food stamps into cash on Craigslist and it’s “a snap,” according to Fox News on Oct. 22.
The food stamp fraud is running rampant and apparently some of the folks getting this benefit don’t really need them because they are taking ads out selling them. For the person who wants to buy food, the food stamp sales are a deal.
For $500 in food stamps, you will have to pay only $350, which gives you $150 in free food, which is what one ad conveys.
Another ad on Craigslist reads:
“If you need food. This is not a gimmick or game,” read one posting from Philadelphia. “Please let me know, I have food stamps for sale..... Serious Replies only!!”
Along with all the food stamp for sale ads, there are food stamps wanted ads. An example of this reads:
“DO YOU NEED SOME QUICK CASH?? -- $100 (atlanta),” reads one ad, and yet another offers, "If you get Food Stamps and need some extra cash then hit me asap."
Another ad is getting the jump on their food stamp allotment by advertising that on Nov. 1 they will have $100 EBT card that they will sell for $60. It sounds as if reserve orders for the food stamp EBT cards are the way to go.
It is illegal to transfer food stamps and they are not allowed to be used at the store by anyone other than the name on the EBT card. Craigslist does list “food stamps” as a commodity not allowed for sale on their site.
With nearly 50 million Americans on the food stamp program, this is one overwhelming task to oversee, but the government waste is blatant today. If people are feeling comfortable enough to advertise the food stamps for sale, they must feel that the chances of getting caught are non-existent.
The EBT cards are issued to people who fall into an income bracket that makes buying food a burden. The amount you receive for your food stamp monthly allotment is depending on your income and how many dependents you have.
The cards are replenished with the same amount of money each month on a designated date. One of the biggest mistakes when creating these cards is not including a photo for ID purposes. There are two ways that people sell their food stamps.
They simply sell the card and then report theirs lost or damaged to get another one, or they can sell the card altogether and just let the person who purchased it keep using the food stamp benefits each month. If they sell their card for the person to use each month, they receive a “lump-sum payment.” Either way it’s illegal to do, but either way people are making money off this government program.
