There are food stamps for pets, according to a Feb. 25 Inquisitor report. Around 47 million families in the U.S. receive federal food stamps, but these only buy food for human family members and not four legged family members.
An organization out of New York City is called Pet Food Stamps, and the organization wants to ensure that no pets go hungry. Currently Pet Food Stamps is working to achieve non-profit status.
If you need food stamps for pets, you can apply with proof of your financial situation. The organization, which is funded by private donations and grants, opened just two weeks ago, and it already has 12,000 applications!
Marc Okon founded Pet Food Stamps, and he said,
"The love of a pet, the therapeutic ability of a pet and things like that are impossible to measure. It gives us a special feeling of pride to be able to help people like that and we’re happy to do it."
This is one reason why he started this program for needy families to be able to feed their pets. Unfortunately, since many families have had to make cutbacks during difficult economic times, many have had to choose between feeding their families and their pets, and a lot of pets have had to be given up simply for lack of pet food. Many of these animals are later put to sleep for lack of available homes.
