The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization of scientists, lawyers, researchers, computer experts and more, uncovers the truth about the environment and issues related to public health. Their campaign, Just label It, is asking the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to label foods that have genetically modified ingredients (GMO).
Most people are unaware that a growing number of food products they eat have been modified genetically with the herbicide, Roundup. The seeds have been altered with herbicides to withstand the spraying of fields with the chemical, Roundup, which kills all other vegetation that could compete with the cash crop. This means the herbicide becomes part of the wheat, oats, rice, corn, barley and other grains, as well as fruits and vegetables.
Concerned citizens in Union, Fannin and Towns counties, as well as Metro Atlanta, buy directly from local organic farmers, who do not use GMO seeds. Organic farmers pay an extremely high price for seeds not owned by Monsanto, maker of Roundup and wholesaler of Roundup Ready seed.
Scientists can not make the claim that GMO foods are safe to eat. No one knows whether the modified crops are causing problems such as wheat and wheat gluten intolerance. What is known is that once the modified seeds have been planted in a particular area, unmodified seeds will not sprout and grow in the same earth.
Is it safe to feed infants soybean milk when the soybeans have been genetically engineered with herbicidal poisons? Are children and adults with compromised immune systems harming themselves every time they sit down to eat? No one can say for sure at this time that GMO foods are safe for human consumption.
Anyone who believes that foods should be labeled when they have been altered with chemicals should sign the petition demanding FDA require such labels. Visit the site of the Environmental Working Group to sign and/or write a message to the FDA.
