Food Finds: Zen and the art of meat maintenance, a carnivore's tale...part 1.

Meat…for those of you who love it and can’t seem to get enough, there are quite a few places to eat in Grand Rapids where the meat portions are ample, and will certainly satisfy your cravings. The other plus side, given the current economy, is that the restaurants featured here will not make your wallet ball up into the fetal position and cry.

Disclaimer: Anetra is not the vegetarian of this outfit, but has no objections to the occasional stalk of asparagus… vegetables and other accoutrements will be covered at a later date.

This will be the first part in a series covering the city’s contributions to a carnivorous Nirvana…

Cherry St. Deli:

834 Cherry St. SE

Grand Rapids, MI 49506

(616) 459-3182

Even the half sandwiches are huge and stacked with real, not processed, cuts of meat. The menu is limitless and you can substitute various delicious gourmet toppings and fillings for your sandwich, pretty much custom made to order if you so desire.

Taco Boy:

3475 Plainfield Ave NE, Grand Rapids 49525

(616) 363-7111

509 44th St SE, Grand Rapids 49548

(616) 257-0057

2529 Alpine Ave NW, Grand Rapids 49544

(616) 365-9255

A Mexican themed fast food place that is actually really good. Think of a nicely dressed, gorgeous third cousin (twice removed) of Taco Bell. The burritos here are filled to capacity with seasoned beef, whether you opt for the double or not. A great place for that niche… They should expand and take over that market. ADVERTISE people!

Andrea’s Pizza:

2014 Boston St. SE

Grand Rapids, MI 49506

(616) 241-5446

When you ask for meat toppings that’s what you get. Everything is piled high and pretty much falls off the plate, your hand, or whatever else holds the slices. Sausage, bacon, pepperoni, ham and even meatballs…. It’s a good choice.

Mongolian Barbecue:

2619 28th St. SE

Grand Rapids, MI 49512

(616) 957-7500

How can it get much better than being given a bowl, a huge selection of  meat and seafood to choose from, and then let loose? There is an architectural art to packing as much as you possibly can into a serving size bowl without it completely toppling over. But with patience and practice...enlightenment will come.

O’Toole’s Public House:

448 Bridge St. NW

Grand Rapids, MI 49504

(616) 742-6095

It is definitely one of the best places to get a burger here. All of the burgers are a half pound of meat. One of their creations, the Bridge Street Bomber contains a glorious helping of ham and bacon. Also highly recommended (even if you’re not feeling “under the weather” ) is the Hangover Burger, for those of you who like everything on your sandwich including the kitchen sink.

Check back soon for the next chapter, exploring what other “meat eats” Grand Rapids has to offer.
