2013 Year in Review

It’s that time of year when food and drink aficionados – and those that report on food news -- peer into the looking glass for what food and drink tasted good this year; what was new and exciting.

And it’s also the flip of a Face time to look ahead to the New Year.

Speaking of two faces, did you know that the concept of New Year’s resolutions was launched in 153 BC with the mythical king Janus who had two faces?

One could reflect on past events and the other face could look forward into the future. Romans placed his picture on the first month of their calendars. January is derived from the name Janus.

In the spirit of Janus – and it takes two - here's a look back and a peek ahead.

2013

This Examiner adores all the food artisans, chefs, restaurants, food enablers and providers she covers – otherwise why all the hard work of food reporting?

Nevertheless, there are standouts that ring true.

These are the restaurants and food one can’t stop talking about and sharing with others in a “you gotta’ try this.”

In no particular order other than perhaps chronology here is a best of 2013 Food and Drink:

1. The opening of Villa Richard with classic chef Michel Richard is perhaps the best example of the Looking Glass of what’s our past -- food future. Here is a chef who has created an indelible mark on the world of culinary art and yet at a “ripe” age – he looks ahead with gourmand gusto:

Looking ahead?

Food trends this Examiner sees are more Scandinavian and Korean food. More local and homegrown focus.

And as a food writer?

This Examiner so wishes no more “Amazing” or “Awesome” or other such superlative to describe food and drink.

Can’t we just celebrate the small, wonderful, enriching, and special “little” moments?

Happy New Year.

Peace. Joy. And a delicious 2014 to all..

Cheers.
