Food 101: What is a cookie party and what are the best cookie recipes?

Most people have heard of a potluck dinner party, but a cookie party is a slightly different animal.  It's usually a female-only affair, although there is no rule that it has to be that way.  It's usually held around the holidays, but that rule can be broken as well - Christmas in July anyone?

A cookie party starts at home with all attendees baking a set amount of their favorite cookies (usually about three dozen) and bringing them to exchange for others at the designated party place.  The hostess may supply copious amounts of food and drink, so that the cookies can be displayed undisturbed, soaking up the ooohs and ahhs.  Or perhaps just coffee and milk will be served, and dipping into the cookies is part of the gathering.  Often guests are asked to bring several copies of the recipe to share.  The cookie party ends with everyone bringing home a delicious assortment of cookies.

Of course you want your cookies to be the best of the bunch.  Here's some help from the experts at Examiner.com to make yours the top choice at the next cookie party:

Sounds fun. Might have to get the kids in on the act too so they can make sure I don't eat too many.
