Las Vegas – After losing a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit at UFC 143, Nick Diaz says that his career in the UFC as well as MMA may be over.
Diaz told Joe Rogan during his post-fight interview that "You guys pay me a ton, but I don't think I'm getting enough to keep going on. ... I don't need this [expletive].”
Diaz felt he did enough to win the fight.
“I'm not going to accept the fact that this is a loss," Diaz said. "I pushed him back the whole fight, I walked him down, and I was the guy on top.”
The judges saw it a different way, scoring the fight 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46 in favor of Condit.
Diaz did congratulate Condit for winning, but he was not so gracious in his assessment of the fight calling the leg kicks that Condit delivered throughout the fight “baby leg kicks.”
Diaz proclaimed that if this was the way fights are scored then “... I don't want to play this game anymore."
Clearly Condit won the fight. He did what few fighters have been able to do and that was keeping Diaz from controlling the pace of the fight. Diaz failed to keep Condit in one place long enough to score his combos consistently.
Dana White did confirm that Diaz does have more fights left on his contract but that retirement is up to Diaz.
“…you never want a guy that is half in and half out, this is not the sport to do halfway.” White told the media during the post-fight press conference.
Do we really think that Diaz will retire? At 28 years old that is highly unlikely. There are still several good match-ups for him. One that was brought up almost immediately was a bout with Josh Koscheck who scored a victory over Mike Pierce at UFC 143.
No matter what, you have to believe that Diaz will go back home to digest what has taken place and discuss his future with his trainers, manager, and family. The last place you want a guy to make a decision like that is following a loss. Diaz is an extremely talented fighter that could easily be right back in the title picture with two decisive wins in a row.
