Readers of this space will recall that in a February article I plugged Kinky Jews' Kinky Seder, and in March I updated that article to include its planned location, Club Casbar, "Brooklyn's newest and cleanest swing club." Well it turns out that four days before the Kinky Seder was to take place police raided and closed Club Casbar. The New York Law article about the raid assumed that the Kinky Seder would be cancelled, but Kinky Jews found another venue and a fun time was had by all. The Jewish Daily Forward's article about the Kinky Seder was dated the day of the raid but makes no mention of it. It does, however, quote Rabbi Shmuely Boteach who opined that a Kinky Seder is disrespectful of tradition and expressed his opposition to the very notion of a kinky Jewish group. My take is that if one is comfortable and secure in one's traditions one can introduce levity and playfulness without being disrespectful, and that if more couples met through groups like Kinky Jews far fewer marriages would have to deal with issues of sexual incompatibility.
