Every winter for 30 years, Sierra Nevada’s Barrel Aged Bigfoot (a barley wine style ale) appears on shelves. This winter, after being aged in oak whiskey barrels for 2 years, the 2013 Bigfoot was finally released in January. The wait was over. Fans all over the country launched a nationwide hunt for this beer. It was said that in the state of Georgia, it only took 6 hours for the entire allotment to be sold out. In Sacramento area however (Ah we are so close to Chico), Bigfoot is still available at least from Bevmo! (Four-pack for $9.99) and Final Gravity (11.5 oz on tap). Whole Foods Market and Nugget Market also carry this beer but you need to check your local store for availability.
Brewed in the barley wine style, Bigfoot is known for its superb cellarability. Like many other barrel aged beer, this vintage dated ale can be stored for the years to come and continue to develop new character and flavors. The current taste is a well-balanced blend of whiskey, brown sugar, vanilla, and other flavors. The alcohol content is 9.6% by volume. The brewery suggests bread pudding, Mission figs, Medjool dates, and blue cheese for food pairing.
