Fingers Murphy is a pseudonym for an International lawyer with an eclectic past. This is the first book featuring Oliver Olson which I predict will become a long and popular series.
As the story opens, Oliver Olson, a brilliant law student from a working class family lands a summer internship at a prestigious law firm in Los Angeles. While he has always thought he would go into law to help people, the lure of money is great and he decides to “sell out” and accept this offer.
Assigned a loser 12 year old, pro-bono case, Oliver delves deep to determine if the prominent lawyer who handled the initial case made any errors that would overturn the murder conviction. As the convicted killer is a U.S. Senator accused of murdering his wife, the story revolves around politics, power, greed and corruption.
His law school professor and mentor shared with Oliver, “Always assume people are lying – but never assume you know why.” So Oliver reviews the original case with this in mind.
The book was a page turner, full of fascinating characters and interesting twists and turns in the case. Moral questions abound in both the case and in Oliver’s life.
While I always hesitate to compare books, having just read “The Lincoln Lawyer” by Michael Connelly, I can’t help but see comparisons.
Both books have intriguing main characters; Connelly’s Mickey Haller is experienced and cynical while Murphy’s Oliver is young and somewhat naïve. Oliver is more likable, but still complex. Both face moral dilemmas and intriguing situations.
If you enjoyed “The Lincoln Lawyer” I strongly suggest that you give “Follow the Money” a try. Currently this first time author is selling his book on Amazon and Barnes & Noble as an e-book for the bargain price of $.99.
Five Stars out of Five.
