Summer has arrived in Phoenix and with it comes the triple digit temperatures. Job seekers who typically would wear suits to interviews may be thinking that the heat allows for a more casual approach to the interview process. Interviewing in person is about appearances and focus on the candidate’s part to explain what experience and skills they can provide the employer. Summer interviewing is no exception, but here are some tips for Phoenix job seekers to keep their cool.
- Wear appropriate attire but plan ahead to beat the heat.
Suits are still more appropriate for interviewing, even in the summer. Women could wear short sleeved suits in basic conservative colors. Plan on being at the interview location at least 15 minutes in advance, to cool down in the car or lobby before walking in. This will also allow you time to put on a tie or jacket in the car and stay cool during the trip to the interview.
- Prepare answers to stay focused on your skills, not the weather and vacations.
The interviewer may want to talk about how hot it is and their latest summer vacation, or your plans for the summer months. Ultimately you need to use the time to explain your abilities and skills that are relevant to that position. Practicing in advance with a friend to re-direct conversation tactfully to the skills and results you have achieved in the past will help you be ready for this situation.
