Focus on women's health at Miami Beach Women's Conference 2010

Best-selling skin care author Dr. Leslie Baumann

Women's health and wellness will be a key focus of the Miami Beach Women's Health Conference as speakers cover the latest news in women's heart health, skin care, stem cell research, and much more this coming weekend (March 26 - 27).

Initially, it was planned to have speakers on only first day of the conference, Friday, with the second day, Saturday devoted to the Women's Expo and trade show. But so many speakers offered their talents that the program was spread over two days, with a particular focus on women's health and wellness during the Saturday portion. (This doesn't mean that there aren't heath-oriented speakers on Friday, so definitely check out that day's schedule on the link below as well!).

On Saturday morning, popular women's health expert and author Leslie Baumann, M.D will speak. Dr. Baumann is an internationally renowned board certified dematologist and author of the New York Times bestselling book "The Skin Type Solution." She served as a professor of dermatology at the University of Miami and is founder of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute, the first academic center of its kindin the US. She now heads the Baumann Cosmetic and Research Institute, and has developed a full line of skin care products based on her research, and writes a popular column for the Miami Herald. Dr. Baumann will speak at 11 a.m.

Women's Health Author Charlotte Libov

Also featured on  Saturday will be nationally known women's health author Charlotte Libov, who will speak on women and heart disease.  (If the name is familiar, you're reading her Examiner.com column at the moment --yes, c'est moi).  Charlotte was a regular New York Times contributor when she learned she had to undergo open-heart surgery for a potentially life-threatening heart defect. She went on to co-author one of the first books on heart disease in women, which was made into a nationally broadcast PBS documentary. She wrote four subsequent award-winning health books, including her most recent, "A Woman's Guide to Heart Attack Recovery," and she now travels across the country, showing women how they can protect their hearts.  Her talk will cover why heart disease in women was overlooked for some three-quarters of a century, which women are at highest risk for heart disease, and how to tailor your lifestyle to reduce your risk of developing the #1 killer disease of women. Charlotte Libov will speak at noon.

Stem cell advocate Sabrina Cohen (Charlotte Libov photo)

Sabrina Cohen was only 14 when a car accident left her paralyzed.  She graduated high school, went on to graduate with a double major from the University of Miami and launch her own public relations business. But that was only the beginning. In 2004, she heard a presentation about stem cell research and recognized that this could be the breakthrough that could free her from her wheelchair. Not only that, though, but she also became entranced with the potential that stem cells have for curing not only paralysis, but also heart disease, diabetes, and many other killer diseases. She closed her business and launched her own foundation to help lead the way. Since then, her organization has awarded its first grant --$25,000 to innovative stem cell researcher Hans Kierstead and Cohen herself was recently accorded a national honor when she was named a 2009 WebMD Health Hero. Sabrina Cohen's talk "Stem Cell 101" will begin at 1 p.m.

These are not the only health and wellness speakers  at the conference.  Other speakers on Saturday include Dr. Eva Ritvo, author of "The Beauty Perscription," who will discuss the importance of self-esteem, outer beauty and overall health," and Gervasio A. Lamas, M.D., chief of the Columbia University of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, who will also give a talk on heart disease in women entitled "Why Can't a Woman Be More Like a Man."  On Friday, Dr. Alice Randolph, a psychologist and specialist in geriatric services, will give a talk entitled "Caring for them & Caring for Me: Striking the Balance in Eldercare," and those who attend the author's panel will have the opportunity to meet Trisha Posner, author of "No Hormones, No Fear -- A Natural Journey Through Menopause."  There will also be programs on self-defense for women.
