FMWD hosts free backyard horticulture class in Altadena

Gardeners in the Altadena area know that the foothill community has some challenges that flatlanders don’t. The Foothill Municipal Water District (FMWD) is hosting a free landscaping class in Altadena on Saturday, June 28, 2014 to offer some solutions.

“Backyard Horticulture Especially in the Wildlife Urban Interface” will be presented by Ellen Mackey, staff ecologist with Metropolitan Water District and the Council for Watershed Health. The workshop will be at Loma Alta Park, 3330 Lincoln Ave., Altadena and run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Mackey has converted her backyard into an urban farm and orchard that produces fresh, organic food and conserves water. She integrates native landscaping with organic farming because “if it doesn’t produce food or support wildlife it doesn’t get watered.”

Space is limited, so spots should be reserved soon. Call Karen Oblak of FMWD at (818) 790-4036 or email her at
