Traveling with an infant may seem daunting. There is a ton of stuff, security can't possible be anything less than a hassle and it would be just your luck if your precious little one cried the entire flight. With all of that said, is the worry really worth putting off a vacation? The key to staying sane during the traveling process is to be prepared! Below are a few tips that may be useful when planning your first flight with baby:
- Try your best to get a direct flight to your final destination.
- Before booking your flight you need to consider whether or not you want your child to have their own seat. Even though your child can travel in your lap at no charge up until age 2 on domestic flights, the FAA recommends that they are placed in a child restraint system in their own seat. Most airlines will offer 50% off of the adult fare, but it is best to check with your particular airline.
- If you choose to keep your child on your lap, get a boarding pass for them. The airlines have to keep a record of everyone on the plane. You will not be allowed to board without one.
- Get your seat assignment as soon as possible. Do you best to get a window. You will have a little more privacy in case you need to breast feed.
- Make a checklist of items you will need for your diaper bag, your baby's suitcase and a first-aid kit. Babyzone has printable lists to give you a head start!
- When packing a diaper bag it might be wise to ditch your over-the-shoulder bag for a backpack. This will keep your hands free!
- An all-in-one stroller is the way to go when traveling. The car seat snaps into a stroller base which makes things incredibly easy!
- If you have a sling, carry the baby in that and push your luggage and carry-on bags in the stroller. You can gate-check the car seat and stroller so they will be waiting for you when you land.
- If you are bringing breast milk, formula or juice it is exempt from the 3-1-1 rule as long as you declare them before the TSA checkpoint. Try to only carry as much as you need.
- Aaah! You are on the plane! When taking off give your baby a pacifier, bottle or breast feed. This will relieve the pressure in their ears and it may stave off crying. At least for the moment.
- The wheels are up! Relax and try to enjoy the flight as much as possible. Believe it or not your baby can read you and if you are stressed chances are they will be too.
You made it! Give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy your vacation!
