Flying solo on V-Day?

DON'T sweat it; while the holiday is great for couples with the discounts on romantic dinners for two and resorts, there's plenty to do locally if you don't have a date. "Singles Awareness Day" doesn't have to be as gloomy as it sounds - and with the right mentality, you can laugh it off and take advantage of the specials to treat yourself (and the extra boost will make your confidence shine.)

Would you rather have a greeting card with hearts on it - or good loving all year-round, not just on one cold day in February?

Take heart and consider these alternatives.

Spa day: Treat yourself to a day of pampering at Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Spa, with locations throughout Chicagoland. Refer a friend and get a 20% discount for yourself plus 15% for him/her - or, now through February 14th, receive a $15 spa card (to treat yourself) with every $100 gift card or certificate purchase (up to $300).

Movie night: This is your chance to rent Sleepless in Seattle and The Ugly Truth, or any other chick-flick you felt deprived of in your last relationship. Stay in and enjoy it in style, kicking back in your pajamas. Gerard Butler's lazy eyes and raspy one-liners will keep you distracted until you find your own McDreamy.

Host your own mixer: Invite singles and consider more adult versions of favorite board games, i.e. Risk in Bed or a racy round of Scattergories. Not only does this give an option for other acquaintances who are dateless, but it will take your own mind off of your single girl weekend. Keep the prepwork light with a cocktail party and self-serve bar so you have plenty of time to enjoy your guests.

Babysit for a friend: If one of your girls has kids, treat her to a night off. She'll definitely appreciate the chance to spend some quality time alone with her man - and will be sure return the favor in her own way. Take them to Water Tower Place and enjoy a carriage ride, or visit the children's museum at Navy Pier.

Still looking to connect for Sunday? Check out Date and Dash's speed-dating parties, or try eHarmony's free communication weekend (65% off membership fees, from now through 02/28/10).  Keep it low-key with easy conversation and mingle over a casual dinner; together, you'll find your own way to chase away the winter blues.
