It's no secret that Austin folks are fascinated with hot air balloons, so if you’re traveling to New Mexico in March, be sure to take in the new exhibit launched last month at the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. This special exhibition, called "We Fill the Sky With Dreams," runs through March 30 and features an exciting assortment of Balloon Fiesta memories and artifacts that have been donated by Balloon Fiesta and members of the ballooning community.
Notable items include the trophy from the First World Hot Air Championships (on loan from Balloon Fiesta) and the neon orange Wile E. Coyote poster from KOB radio's first Balloon Fiesta event in 1972. There is also a complete balloon system on display, offering a great photo opportunity for visitors.
Marilee Schmit Nason, Curator of Collections for the Balloon Museum, said the exhibit is full of collectable Balloon Fiesta items like pins, patches and balloon mail. "In addition to highlighting [Balloon] Fiesta, the exhibition is about the relationship of hot air ballooning to Albuquerque in general."
Since the first balloon flights in 1783, there have been many feats recorded in the story of balloon flight. Hot air and gas balloons have been used for adventure, scientific experiments, the arts, warfare, espionage, and the exploration of space. The exhibits at the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum help visitors see and understand how all this happened. Emphasis is on exhibits that combine historic artifacts with modern multi-media technology to create a sense of excitement as well as an educational environment.
Visitors can watch video clips of historic and contemporary ballooning events, view striking images of hot air balloons, and learn how hot air balloons fly.
