The Philadelphia Flyers released their ‘completed’ roster for their 2013 training camp earlier today. The training camp roster has 63 players, composed of 35 forwards, 22 defensemen, and six goaltenders.
However, the roster distributed by the Flyers may have one major addendum. According to a report on Prohockeytalk.NBCsports.com, Daniel Cleary will not be joining the Flyers for training camp.
Camp, which begins on Thursday, September 12th, will take place at the Wells Fargo Center for the first three days. The club’s home arena will host training camp for the first time, due to ongoing renovations of the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ.
The daily training sessions at the South Philadelphia sports complex will consist of three on-ice sessions, with roughly a third of the 63 man roster participating in each. They are scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 12:30 PM. Finishing up on Saturday the 14th, the Wells Fargo sessions are free and open to the public.
On Sunday, September 15, the Flyers play their first preseason game vs. Toronto at the Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario. The preseason schedule continues as the orange and black have split-squads facing off against both the Leafs and Washington on the 16th. Before having a day off on the 18th, the Flyers face the New York Rangers on the 17th.
Peter Laviolette then takes his team to the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY from September 19-22, before coming back to close camp at the Skate Zone from the 23rd-30th with more public sessions. Their last three preseason games will be on the 24th and 26th against the Devils, and 27th against the Caps.
The Flyers, who open their regular season at home on Wednesday, October 2nd against Toronto, have many questions to answer during the next 18 day stretch. The unresolved Cleary situation is only one of them.
Who will be the number one goalie? How will the lines shake out? Will Vincent Lecavalier play wing on the top line, or center the second line? Which of the dozen or so NHL ready defensemen will make the final 7 on the opening night roster? Will any of the young prospects make the team?
