The New Year is almost upon us, and the Philly area has already been in a deep freeze, even before winter has officially rolled around. When the calendar turns to 2014 into January, winter will be at its peak. Warmer temperatures will be on the mind. How does dry, 70 degree weather sound to get you out of the winter blues? This is what you can expect of the desert of Arizona, and the Flyers play here on January 4 against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Phoenix area, besides being some of the most beautiful and unique landscape in the country, is full of adventures to take part in and places to visit. Taking in that landscape is highly recommended on your itinerary while in the area. If you are looking to get some exercise and enjoy that beautiful winter Phoenix weather, a great place to hike is Piestewa Peak, standing at 2608 feet. Once you get to the top of the mountain, you are treated to a fantastic view of the city.
If you aren’t looking to walk the scenery, and want to drive and also have some adventure at the same time, another highly recommended Phoenix-area destination is Apache Trail. It is a designated United States Forest Service Scenic Byway and is not for the faint of heart. A portion of the trail is unpaved and without any safety barriers. It is certainly a road for those that seek adventure and want a great view at the same time. Just be prepared and drive with extra caution!
Another must-visit while you are making your visit to see the Flyers play is the city of Scottsdale. This destination suburb of Phoenix is chock full of shops and restaurants, not to mention some of the best golf courses in the state of Arizona. There are some unique Scottsdale experiences where you can experience some of the best that the city has to offer, such as the Musical Instrument Museum, where you can learn about other cultures of the world through the instruments that they play. There is also the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, an urban preserve that is the gateway to the beautiful Sonoran Desert, where you can experience some of the best scenery the desert has to offer.
Another fun experience in the Phoenix area to enjoy with the entire family is Rawhide, located in Chandler, just south of Arizona. It is one of Arizona’s largest western-themed attractions and is full of options. It has gunfights and stunt shows, you can ride a mechanical bull, you can take old western photos and you can eat at the Rawhide Steakhouse and Saloon with live entertainment. This is just a taste of what you can expect if you make the trip to Rawhide while in town.
Located in Glendale, Arizona, Jobing.com Arena is a state of the art arena that opened in 2003. It is billed as the anchor of the Westgate Entertainment District, a huge sports and entertainment complex that is full of shops, restaurants and entertainment. It is home to the WaterDance Plaza, an open-air dancing water show that brings to mine the fountain show of Las Vegas’s Bellagio.
The Flyers are finally showing that they are a formidable team in the East again. As the New Year starts, now is the time for them to start to break themselves away from the pack. The Coyotes, over the past few years, have been a tough team for the Flyers to beat, so it should be an enjoyable matchup. Plus, as has been driven home in this article, Arizona is worth the visit in itself. It is legitimately one of the most beautiful states in the country and the winter is the perfect time to go.
