Outdoor programming, for the most part, has gotten out of control. The vast majority of hunting and fishing shows today fall victim to the “Reality TV” treatment. Many of the destinations that are showcased during these “extreme outdoors” shows take place on high-fenced trophy management farms, on private lakes and rivers, or in exotic locations that most budget conscious Americans could never afford
While most of the today’s outdoor programs are closer to “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” than the hunting and fishing experiences familiar to most Americans, there are a few exceptions. One show in particular titled Fly Rod Chronicles (FRC) is a breath of fresh air. The popular program which airs on the Outdoor Channel is hosted by Curtis Fleming, a native of Central West Virginia.
A recent episode of Fly Rod Chronicles showcased November trout fishing on the Bluestone River Gorge, located in Southern WV. The cast and crew stayed at the Pipestem Resort and experienced some truly exceptional trout fishing. The highlight of the episode features host Curtis Fleming hooking and landing a rainbow trout that stretched nearly 27 inches.
There were multiple “big fish” caught including a 3 lb. golden trout (pictured above) as well as several very large rainbows. The scenery was stunning, the crew which traveled by horseback down to waters of the Bluestone Gorge caught fish almost non-stop. All of the trout were skillfully caught on fly tackle, delicately handled, and then released back into the river. The accommodations were more than inviting, the food (the package includes four meals) looked amazing, and then comes the best part of all, the price.
The cost for a two-day fishing trip complete with a night’s lodging, guide service, and horse rental totals less than $320. In other words, it’s an exclusive, resort style fishing experience that’s available to just about anyone.
