Fly fishing events set for Reno/Tahoe

Late winter and early spring are great times to be a fly fisherman. More opportunities to fly fish open up, local events, banquets and seminars are planned, but if you want to learn fly fishing or just want to take your skills to the next level, there's something for everybody scheduled in the next four months. Plan ahead, tickets are on sale and space is limited.

Starting in March 8, both the Fly Fishing Film Tour is schedule and the Truckee River Fly Fishers are holding their annual banquet. Both events promise to be a fun night of celebrating friends and fly fishing. Tickets for the film festival to be held at the Atlantis run $12 while the Truckee River Fly Fishers banquet will be held at Boomtown,and tickets run $40 early price/$45 at the door. You can get your tickets ahead of time at Reno Orvis. Tickets are being sold at the store for both events, but bring cash.

On March 15, Reno Orvis will also be kicking off it's popular Fly Fishing 101 classes. These classes introduce anglers to the sport of fly fishing, help you accelerate the learning curve and they can also teach you a new technique or about reading water. The store offers free FF101 and FF201 classes. There are also FF301 classes for a small fee to learn more about fishing the Truckee.

Here is a list of dates, all free classes typically run about three hours and are held in the mornings on Saturdays and Sundays. Pick a date and contact the store ASAP:

Classes will be taught by Reno Orvis' knowledgeable staffers Jan Nemec, Gary Bonanno and Joe Musser. All instructors have fly fished for years and enjoy helping new comers and experienced anglers alike, have more success on area waters.

March 15 is also on the calendar as a day to enjoy an informative seminar on the Bighorn River at Orvis Reno. Outfitters from the Bighorn Angler will be in town to share information about fishing the Bighorn tying flies and highlighting their cabins and guide service to give anglers an idea of everything they offer.

Lastly, on May 3, the shop will be hosting a Spring Orvis Days Event. The day will be filled with seminars, demonstrations, special deals on fly fishing gear as well as free food, drinks and giveaways. The lineup of events is still be put together, but a couple professional tiers will be on hand to tie their latest creations like Nemec's stonefly and Ouellette's Stone Daddy.
