The Indiana Department of Health says the number of flu deaths in the state has risen to 15, but it’s not too late to get a flu shot, thanks in part to additional flu clinics that have been set up to meet the demand of Hoosiers after shortages of the vaccine were reported in certain areas.
Visiting Nurse Service at St. Francis will offer two additional flu clinics this week for anyone six months and older. The planned clinics for this year's flu season ended weeks ago, but according to a spokeswoman, many people have been calling their offices looking for the flu vaccine.
Other parts of the country are seeing shortages of vaccine but Indiana has only had spot shortages, said an Indiana State Department of Health official.
Both clinics are scheduled at the Visiting Nurse Service offices at 4701 N. Keystone Ave., from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. No appointment or prescription is required, but shots will be administered on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will also be a limited supply of Thimerosal-free vaccines.
A flu shot will cost $35, or $30 for the half-dose for children between the ages of 6 to 35 months. The Thimerosal-free shot will cost $40.
For those over 70 years old, pneumonia vaccinations will be available as well.
Visiting Nurse Service at St. Francis will accept cash, check, some Medicare plans, and Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield.
