Floyd Mayweather will again overcome Marcos Maidana on Mexican Independence Day

In an enthralling prizefight, Floyd Mayweather earned a majority decision over Marcos Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) officially overcame Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) by counts of 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114 to unify welterweight world titles in front of 16,268 electric fans.

A powerful and beloved Argentinean backed by thousands of raucous supporters, Maidana fought aggressively, muscled Mayweather against the ropes, and relentlessly launched wild overhand rights.

"I definitely think I won," said Maidana, 30, who entered as a 12-to-1 underdog. "Floyd had never been hit by a man before. I had to change the gloves [after a last-minute problem with his original gloves on Friday] and I still gave him a great fight. He did dominate some rounds. But the majority, I dominated them."

Unfortunately for Argentina and “El Chino,” Maidana rarely landed flush shots and Mayweather consistently countered and connected with solid left hooks and lead right hands.

"This was a tough, competitive fight. This is what fans want to see," said Mayweather, 37, the sport’s pound-for-pound king. "I want to give fans an exciting fight. Normally, I box and move. Tonight, I gave fans an exciting fight. I stood there and fought him. He's a good fighter, I take nothing away from him."

According to CompuBox, Mayweather was struck by Maidana more times than by any other opponent in his fabled career as a defensive virtuoso.

“Never been hit by a man before,” Mayweather is apparently willing to give Maidana a rematch this September.

Considering the lack of appealing options, expect Floyd Mayweather to again outscore Marcos Maidana this autumn on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Sin City.
