IBO and Ring Magazine light welterweight champion Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao badly bludgeoned Miguel Cotto to capture the WBO welterweight championship by TKO in the 12th round Saturday night at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs) showed tremendous moxie and determination and he remained very competitive with Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) throughout the opening rounds.

Unfortunately for Cotto, Pacquiao ultimately proved to be too quick and strong for the native of Puerto Rico.

“He (Pacquiao) hit harder than we expected and he was a lot stronger than we expected,” Cotto’s trainer, Joe Santiago, said.

Cotto concurred with Santiago’s assessment and he admitted that Pacquiao’s quickness was extremely tough to overcome.

“I didn’t know from where the punches were coming,” said Cotto, 29, who refused to allow his corner to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

Pacquiao applauded Cotto’s valiant efforts and he acknowledged that he was cautious early of the former champion’s renowned power.

“Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time,” said Pacquiao, 30, who is rated by Ring Magazine as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer in the world. “It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power.”

As soon as the fight concluded, the crowd began to chant, “We want Floyd! We want Floyd!”

Obviously, the audience was clamoring for a potential matchup that would pit Pacquiao versus former WBC welterweight champion “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, 32.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs), who was won six world boxing championships in five different weight classes, has been noncommittal at the notion of fighting Pacquiao.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Pacquiao said about a lucrative battle with the man www.espn.com ranked #48 on their “50 Greatest Boxers of All-Time” list. “I’m sure he doesn’t want the fight.”

The President of HBO Sports, Ross Greenburg, said he couldn’t fathom why either Pacquiao or Mayweather would opt out of a fight against each other.

“Boxing fans demand it and the sport needs it,” said Greenburg. “If you’re an athlete, do you say that you don’t want to play in the Super Bowl?”

Pacquiao, who became the first fighter in history to win a belt in seven weight classes this past weekend, explained why he believes that Mayweather will cower and avoid a fight against him in the future.

“Boxing for him is like a business,” Pacquiao said. “Mayweather doesn’t care about the people around him watching. He doesn’t care if the fight is boring, as long as the fight is finished and he gets plenty of money. I want people to be happy. You have a big responsibility as a boxer.”

“Pretty Boy’s” father, Floyd Sr., attended last Saturday’s highly-anticipated bout.

Although Mayweather Sr. predicted that his son would decimate Pacquiao, he said he would advise him not to fight Pacquiao.

“I have my own personal reasons,” Mayweather Sr. said like the yellow clown pocket he has shown himself to be.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is truly a legendary pugilist and his superb defensive skills would create significant issues for Pacquiao.

Mayweather is essentially the very personification of a boxer.

On the contrary, Pacquiao is much more of a rugged brawler than he is strictly a pure boxer.

If Pacquiao doesn’t eventually scrap Mayweather, boxing will yet again be attempting suicide.

However, if they do actually matchup against one another, Mayweather against Pacquiao would be an epic battle for the ages.

As noted, Mayweather is much more artful in the ring than Pacquiao is.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao is also a gifted tactician and his heart will never be questioned.

If Mayweather has any testicular fortitude whatsoever, he will box Pacquiao and he will ultimately be defeated for the first time in his professional career by the “Fighting Pride of the Philippines.”

Mayweather non-committal about fighting Pacquiao...you do know that Ross Greenburg and Richard Schaefer got the go ahead from Floyd to make this fight happen, right? It's media types like you who throw out biased articles based on who you like and not facts that get things twisted. As far as Pacquiao beating Floyd as decisively as the mainstream media thinks...do any of you remember how Marquez took it to Pac for two fights, getting robbed in one of them, and then was totally disassembled by Floyd? People have been quick to claim it was the size advantage, etc..., but size played no part in it...Floyd beat that man using skill, so what makes everybody think that Pacquiao's skills have improved so much? They haven't, he just got stronger and knocked out two guys who were already damaged goods. Pac is great, but Floyd vastly outdid Marquez, who gave Pac hell, so why do you think he can go in and dominate Floyd? Answer-he cant!!! Mayweather by decision...report objectively or shut up!

  • hoy 2 years ago

Mayweather Sr. said before he definitely want Jr. to fight Pacquiao. Now when he saw how Pacquiao beat up Cotto he will advise his son not to fight Pacquiao? I think they're very scared to fight Pacquiao. I think he knew Jr. doesn't have any chance at all against Pacquiao.

  • dionisia sr. 2 years ago

i second the motion... mayweather ducked cotto... pacquaio whipped cotto's ass... ergo, mayweather will duck pacquiao... or else paquiao will whip mayweather's ass!!!

  • dionisia sr. 2 years ago

    @ medina:
why dont you get ur facts straight... marquez went up in weight and was out boxed by mayweather... pac went up in weight and sent all of his opponents to the hospital after the fight... marquez gave pac hell at 126 and 130... but at pac's current weight, mayweather jr. needs sr and his uncle in the ring with him to stand a chance against the "diminutive" pacman...

Take a step back and look at Manny's last 4 opponents. Manny has looked good, but if you seriously evaluate it, I think it's more a case of being expertly matched with limited opponents. All were seriously compromised in some way or another. David Diaz was a slow, plodding one-dimensional fighter. Oscar was old and weight-drained. He had already been whupped on by little Steve Forbes, if you recall. Hatton had his lights turned out by Floyd, and then two subsequent bouts where he showed that he wasn't the same afterwards. Cotto had the fight beaten out of him by Margarito. So, if you're just collecting names then Pac's recent run looks pretty good, but if you have any boxing intelligence then you'll look a little deeper. Pac has never faced anyone with the skills of Floyd, and Pac's style matches Floyd perfectly. Don't dismiss the idea that Pacman may be scared of Floyd.

Manny is to smart and slick to get caught up in a brawl ! His accuracy, counter punching and boxing skills combined with speed and above all defense will set the pace for the fight. Hes a true technical boxer as oppose to manny who is more of a brawler . . Manny has great power, speed and condition but he has no defense..Money doesnt have the power to knock out manny and It will be a hell of a fight !! Manny will put on a lot of pressure but eventually will get out-boxed by money !!

@dionisia sr. - My facts are straight. If Floyd told them to make the fight happen how is that ducking him? It's not. And, forget the weight class, Floyd outclassed a man who gave Pac hell for 2 fights. If weight class is your argument then put an asterisk beside Pac's De La Hoya victory, because Oscar went down 15 pounds to fight him. And, I do think Floyd should have fought Cotto, but if memory serves me right, Floyd passed on him & Margarito not out of fear, but to exercise the option to get out of his Top Rank contract...how's that for facts? My point is this, Floyd isn't and never has or will be a brawler, he's a pure boxer, and the last time I took count, the sport was called boxing...that being said, Floyd has the skill set to give Pac some go, and beat him...he's better on defense, lateral movement, just as fast and smarter in the ring. And hoy, Floyd Sr. made the don't fight comments, not Jr...when this fight happens, what will your argument be when Floyd wins?

Mayweather calling Manny out? Maybe. If Mayweather ask for more than 50-50, then he is ducking. He'll blame not making the fight on everyone else.

Of course both fighters want the better share of the money and they will play the posturing game, but when it comes down to it, Manny ducks no worthy opponent and I feel he will fight for 50-50. Will Mayweather?

Mayweather is a good fighter. But his media game is so exposed now. No real boxing fan is going to sit around listening to him talk about how much better he is than Manny. He has plenty of potential dangerous tools like his reach and speed.

We just want to see the two of the best boxers fight. Do your talking in the ring. Manny does.

  • tundraman 2 years ago

Mayweather is all talk right now because he knows that Arum will not give him a 60/40 split. I say no too. He does not deserve that type of split, he is not even holding a belt. Mayweather retired on his own, no one forced him to retire then he comes back expecting to be number one again, don't work like that PBF. You have to prove yourself again in order to claim to be the best, fighting little men just does not prove a thing especially since you couldn't knock the guy out. His last fight drew money because people wanted to see someone shut this clown up. All the Mayweathers can do is accuse Manny of illegal drugs. I saw and interview with Manny after the Hatton fight where Manny actually said that he wants to fight mouthy people like PBF so that he can shut them up for good.

  • ESL boi 2 years ago

Based on performance and achievements 60-40 split favor of KING PACQUIAO!

  • Levin253 2 years ago

Pacquiao will not duck anyone within his weight and size... the only reason why this fight won't happened because Floyd wants all the money. Floyd wants 60% and Manny wants 50/50. They should fight 45/45 and the winner takes the 10%

  • ESL boi 2 years ago

50-50 Split is a slap on the face for Pacquiao. 60-40 makes sence!

  • BELAT 2 years ago

If ever the fight happens floyd would run run like a thief !The world wants manny to shut floyds bad mouth to enlightened his rotten mind ! Southpaw stance of great manny is very dangerous enough to inflict serious damage envisioned by the jealous mayweathers !

By Liam Santiago, Before the Fight:
I am sticking by the statement I made a couple of weeks back. If Miguel Cotto loses to Manny Pacquiao on November 14th, I will never write another boxing article. If Pacquiao can, somehow, pull off the win, it will be a very emotional day. Tears will flow. However, anyone with a decent knowledge of boxing will understand, the odds are stacked against Pac-Man.

Lets remember, Cotto will not be coming into this fight dehydrated, ”dead at the weight”, like De La Hoya was. He will not have a useless trainer in his corner, who will destroy his mental focus and preparation, like Hatton did. And, by what I hear, he will not peak three weeks prior to the fight, like Hatton did. Cotto has a much better defence than Hatton, he has a great jab and under rated speed. The Puerto Rican phenomenon also…

  • Manuel Perez 2 years ago

By Manuel Perez, Nov 16, 2009: First of all, I’m not quitting. I don’t care if Miguel Cotto lost, Manny Pacquiao looked like crap to me… I think Juan Manuel Marquez would have beaten Pacquiao the way he fought on Saturday night and so would have Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Paul Williams.

I’m not impressed with his sloppy performance against Cotto. Pacquiao used his face to stop punches all night long and didn’t look good at all in my book. Pacquiao is lucky he wasn’t in there with Marquez, Mayweather, Williams or Mosley last Saturday night because that would have been curtains for him.

  • Manuel Perez 2 years ago

By Liam Santiago, Nov 15, 2009:
I said before the fight that if Cotto loses I would quit my job. Wrong again. If only Pacquiao did not beat such a weight dead, shot fighter, I would walk away. But, the way I see it is he did not beat Cotto, he beat a ghost of Cotto. Not only did Pacquiao drag Cotto down from his usual welterweight limit, he also forced him to put his title on the line. What is boxing coming to.

  • Rard 2 years ago

Floyd has never faced anyone good enough. He's been ducking Moseley and Cotto. Yet Manny fought Cotto and KOed him. Floyd's been cherry picking for many years now. I would even bet that Cotto would KO Floyd within 8 rounds. Heck Floyd even cheated by not making the contract weight against Marquez, and would not even want to be weighed in on fight night... why because he knew he purposely took all the advantages. Fattened up Marquez to nullify all speed and power, I thought I was watching him in slow motion. Yet Floyd, despite all the cheating advantages, did not even knock Marquez out. Floyd's got good defence, I admit... but Cotto, Mosley, Berto, and all the more Pac can easily beat him.

Manuel Perez always contradicts himself. He knew all the stats. Talks about Cotto being weight drained are ridiculous. Even Cotto's own nutritionists would vouch for that. Cotto's been fighting at an average of 146.5 lbs.
Anyway... why pay attention to Manuel Perez who's always been a Pacquiao-Hater, when the whole world knows the truth.

  • boxer 2 years ago

Manny will KO floyd and leave him brain damaged.
Floyd is an easier fight for Manny than Cotto. GayFlo has no power.
He can roll his body all he wants all the way to floor, we will hit him.

He can roll his body for the 1 2 punches but not Manny's 10 punches in a row with nuclear power behind it.
This is an easy fight for Manny because GayFlo does not attack...

Brain damage will be the result, count on it

this is one of the easiest fight for Manny.

  • #1floydfan 2 years ago

what would a win over mosley prove? that he can beat yet another old man? lmfao ha ha ha ha ha stop tryna make excusses the time has arrived it's our turn.....we'll show you how to beat this pacquiao......cotto never even got to test his chin...and now everybody talking like it's iron lol.....floyd will put that chin to the test with his laser like presition....don't try gimme that pacs too fast either cause now one and i mean no one cranks that speedball like floyd do...seriously

  • #1floydfan 2 years ago

Floyd is my hero and i will do or say anything for him, trust me. He is the love of my life.

Testicular fortitude. I agree that THAT is what Floyd Jr. needs and not excuses. He MUST fight Pacquiao and prove that he is not just all talk. Pricing himself so high that Manny will not agree is a means of avoiding a fight. To prove that he really believes he is better, he should agree that the winner (i.e., better boxer) will get 60% and the loser 40%.

  • #1floydfan 2 years ago

i hope pacquiao doesn't back out or make some kind of outrages demand.....because as of now pacquiaos holding all the cards....it's not if floyd will fight pacquiao.....floyds made it pretty obvious.....it's will pacquiao fight floyd....because floyds been doing better numbers before i still think 50-50 fair....don't you?

that's the nature of a gay, "always talking" and that's floyd. he's annoying. always talking that he's the best but not fighting the best fighter! he fights JMM because JMM called him. manny did not call him. how could manny call him if he has a fight the following day. i'm referring to hatton fight because floyd declared to fight JMM a day before pacquiao - hatton. and when mosley called him, mosley is disrespecting him! that's the definition of a "coward". not fighting the best fighter in WW division because they're not a draw! if he is a draw, why he is worried that the other guy is not a draw! if he really is, then people will watch his fight no matter who his opponent is? earlier reports shows pacman - cotto generates more than floyd-JMM fights! he is not a champion and certainly he is not the draw, "why can't he accept the 50/50 proposition that team pacquiao indicated". i guess 60/40 in pacman's favor has a little justice than floyd taking the lion share!!!

  • #1floydfan 2 years ago
