Taking to his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night, February 5, Mayweather, 35, revealed some news about some details of his upcoming May 4 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
While it was largely speculated that Floyd would be in line to face off with WBC interim titlist Robert Guerrero, 29, he dropped the news that he has actually been in conversation with another belt holder.
“The negotiations for my fight are almost done,” Mayweather tweeted. “The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.”
The 25-year-old Alexander holds a 24-1 record with 13 knockouts, with the lone blemish being a January 2011 ten-round technical-decision that he dropped against reigning WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley.
Some suspect that this move by Mayweather may be a bluff, and that Guerrero will still ending up landing his desired shot at the world’s recognized pound-for-pound king.
Expect more news in the coming days.
