Although the celebration of floral events are not active at all during winter season, there are a couple of floral festivals in the area where the climate is not too bad even in the winter. I would like to introduce one of such festivals as follows:
Chiang Mai is located about 450 miles North of Bangkok and it is the capital city of Thailand. Every year on the first weekend of February, they celebrate a big floral festival called Chiang Mai Flower Festival.
In public spaces all around the town of Chiang Mai, you can find the flower beds which are so beautiful at this time of year. Especially the gorgeous displays of yellow and white chrysanthemums and the Damask Rose as well as the pink and purplish Dendrobium orchids are eye catching flowers which are really enjoyed by a lot of tourists from all over the world.
Among various decorations during the festival, one of the most outstanding place is the South Western corner of the moat where vendors of plants and garden decorations set up their stalls. This location could be said one of the best corner of the moat where people can really enjoy viewing various decorations. From this location you can easily reach Suan Buak Haad which is a pleasant public space with formal gardens arranged around pools and bridges.
During the Flower Festival, this park is completely transformed with colorful displays of flowers and the well known local orchids. These floral decorations are set out for the judges who choose the best of each species. In addition to such decorations, landscape specialists also set up various displays featuring waterfalls and patios etc.
Also special stands are provided in order for foreign exhibitors from neighboring countries to display for selling their local products during the festival. Visitors can also enjoy the Flower Parade that usually moves slowly with frequent stops, which helps visitors easily take pictures of gaily decorated floats, beautifully dressed up girls and hill tribe people in their colorful costumes. Dancers in traditional costumes perform Thai dances, and those taking part in the flower parade hand out roses to the spectators.
Many of the pretty girls atop the gaily decorated floats and carriages are usually candidates for the Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival competition. By late afternoon the most exciting highlight of the festival – choosing the Chiang Mai Flower Festival Queen - begins. The party goes on into the evening until the Flower Festival Queen is chosen.
