It was reported yesterday that a Fort Pierce, Florida woman, Pamela Latrimore, sold her MRI scan on eBay for $730 to an anonymous bidder from California. What was so intriguing about her MRI? It supposedly depicts the Virgin Mary. It is interesting how easily believers will fork over good money for things that they think contain mysterious religious iconography.
Science tells us that when we look at something that is foreign or unusual to us, our minds try to make sense of it by associating it to things we know. Essentially, you will see what you hope to find. Of course, you will never convince certain believers of this phenomenon.
Regardless of the motivation of the bidders to drive the sale price up to $730, Latrimore has said that she is going to use the money from the sale of her MRI to start a non-profit organization to help sick people in Jacksonville.
