The FWZBC jurisdiction spans centers and bowling associations in seven Florida counties -- Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Citrus and Hernando -- and all entrants must be current members of the United States Bowling Congress.
Entry fee into the singles category is $20, while the optional virtual doubles, using scores rolled in singles action, carries a $30 entry fee. Handicap will be on a 90 percent of 220 basis, and squad times will be at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, and at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 13.
In the virtual doubles, entrants will have the opportunity to combine scores with other bowlers on the same squad. Bowlers may compete in doubles with as many partners as desired, but each partner must also be rolling singles in the same session. Re-entries will be permitted with the same or different partners, but no one can cash more than once with the same partner.
The prize fund will be paid on a 1-in-10 ratio, brackets will be available, and walk-ins and multiple participation will be accepted. A breakdown of the $20 singles entry fee consists of $10 into the prize fund, $7.50 for lineage and $2.50 for tournament expenses, while the $25 of the $30 virtual doubles fee will be earmarked for the prize fund with the other $5 going toward expenses.
The final frame: Walt Schmidt
Walt Schmidt, one of the area's best bowlers in the early days of Sarasota bowling and a 1974 inductee into the Sarasota-Manatee Men's Bowling Hall of Fame, died at the age of 92 last week.
The native of Port Huron, Mich., had numerous on-the-lanes accomplishments, including a Florida state tournament singles championship, plus five titles in Sarasota-Manatee County Bowling Association tournaments.
His high sanctioned game was 288 and high series was 721 in a much-lower-scoring era, and for years, he shared the top all-time average at Sarasota Lanes with 199. In addition, he was a certified bowling instructor and youth coach over many years.
