Florida spring training schedule announced

Governor Rick Scott unveiled the 263-baseball game schedule highlighting the 125thAnniversary of Major League Baseball’s Spring Training in Florida.

Governor Scott said, "“Major League Baseball’s Spring Training in Florida is one of our nation’s gems. Every spring, athletes come to Florida to train and baseball fans throughout America visit Florida to enjoy great games, our wonderful climate and many tourist destinations. Spring training also generates more than $700 million for our communities ever year, meaning more jobs and opportunities for Florida families. With the 2013 training season almost here, I encourage families everywhere to attend a game in Florida, and take the time to enjoy one of America’s greatest pastimes.," said Scott.

Spring Training Baseball is an economic development generator for Florida with more than 1.5 million fans attending games annually. A 2009 Economic Impact Survey of Spring Training Baseball showed a $753 million benefit to the state annually. Since the 2000 season, more than 20 million fans have passed through the turnstiles at Florida stadiums. The 2012 Spring-Training season broke a per-game attendance record with 6,965 fans per game at 233 games. The 38-day schedule begins on Thursday, February 21 with the Boston Red Sox hosting a pair of college teams at Jet Blue Stadium in Fort Myers and concludes on Saturday, March 30, according to Lane Wright, spokesperson for the Office of Gov. Rick Scott.
