A social worker from Saint Petersburg did an unspeakable thing; after placing a troubled boy with two different foster families and having those families return him due to his ‘anger issues,’ she told her superiors she could not be his caseworker anymore. The very next day she started arrangements to adopt him.
Connie Going said there are families out there for every child and that “every child is adoptable.” She tried for ten years to place him in a fitting home along with his two younger sisters, to no avail. His sisters found a home but he was once again in the foster system.
Social Work Dilemma
The social work field attracts individuals with tolerant attitudes for very little pay. Generally, this occupation is famous for low pay that is relative to the education required so it takes a passionate person to pursue a career in the child welfare field.
Many caseworkers are over-loaded with clientele which contributes to what is termed as a ‘burn-out’ or “compassion fatigue” in that field. This burn-out combined with the tolerant personalities and the low pay of social workers is part of the culprit for the turn-over rates.
Connie Going did her best to place the boy with anger issues with a family only to realize that in fact she was his family.
