Florida Pastor Terry Jones insults Islam and burns the Koran. Jones, the controversial evangelical that gained the worlds attention last fall after threatening to burn the Koran on 9/11, is once again in the headlines after finally making good on his threat, and burning the Islam's holy text, the Koran.
Sunday Jones, along with fellow pastor Wayne Sapp, conducted a mock trial of the holy text in front of approximately 30 people. After the faux trial a jury found the Koran guilty, and the holy book was "executed." After being soaked in Kerosene a copy of the Koan was burned.
Many humanists, atheists, agnostics and free thinkers have expressed disgust with the gratuitous display of disrespect. Many in the godless community find the burning of any book abhorrent, and counter to fundamental notions of freedom and tolerance.
Last fall Terry Jones and his tiny, misguided congregation at the Dove World Outreach Center, united the world in opposition to their planned book burning party. After threatening to burn the Koran on September 11, Jones received protests from the White House, the Vatican, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, the US Secretary of State, fellow Christian evangelicals, veterans' groups, Hollywood celebrities and political pundits.
Indeed, even Hollywood liberals like Angelina Jolie and Tea Party conservatives like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin all rejected the idea of burning Korans as a means to commemorate the anniversary of the World Trade Center terrorist attack on 9/11.
Apparently last Sunday Jones had a change of heart, and broke a pledge he gave last fall not to burn the Koran. The ramifications, if any, of Jones' broken pledge, remains to be seen.
