Florida legislature may reform government pension

Change may be coming to pension plans for state workers. According to a Florida legislative report contained in the April 20 Sun Sentinel, Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford is promoting HB 7173 which would move future state employees into an investment option that might save the State of Florida $28.6 billion over 40 years. Senate Bill 246, co-sponsored by Senators Jeremy Ring and Rob Bradley would end the requirement that growth in excise taxes on insurance premiums would be used to enhance pension benefits, according to the April 20 report in the Sun Sentinel.

"I don't think this would be fair to government workers. These are people who dedicate their lives to helping the people of Florida and they deserve a better deal on their retirement," said Juan Hernandez.

"It is time that people who work for the government join the rest of the world. I don't get a pension where I work, why should government workers get a pension," said Carla Hobson.
