Last week the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) released the July 2013 Employment Figures. Each month the Florida DEO communicates a statewide snapshot of overall employment in the state. The information is compiled from the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in cooperation with Florida DEO Bureau of Labor Market Statistics. Nationally unemployment is at 7.7% while Florida posts a 7.4% unemployment rate.
According to the recent report there are 665,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of a possible labor force of 9,404,000. During the month of July Florida had an increase of 27,600 jobs. July marks 38 straight months where the state has had positive job growth. Over the last 12 months Florida has created 143,700 jobs. Trade, Transportation & Utilities has added 53,800 jobs since July 2012 followed by Leisure & Hospitality adding 25,600 jobs.
Among the 67 counties in Florida unemployment varied widely. Hendry County reports an unemployment rate of 15.5%.The large unemployment for Hendry County is believed to be due to job declines in agriculture and government. St. Lucie County and Flager County had an unemployment rate of 10.4% for July. Monroe County and Walton County had the lowest county unemployment rate at 4.2% with Okaloosa County next at 5.1%.
Within Florida cities there are 23 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) that are a part of the DEO report that was released. The MSA of Crestville-Ft Walton Beach-Destin reported the lowest metro unemployment rate of 5.1% compared to Palm Coast that posted the highest metro unemployment in the state at 10.4%. In Florida there are 11 MSAs that are above the state unemployment rate; 10 MSAs that are below the state unemployment rate and 2 metro areas equal to the state unemployment rate of 7.4%.
