Florida governor Rick Scott cuts $5 billion from budget

February 8, 2011

Reuters last night announced that the new bugdet proposed by Tea Party backed Governor Rick Scott would cut $5 billion dollars worth of spending, along with some taxes, in order to close his state's $4 billion dollar deficit. Most of the cuts are in medicaid and state pension plans.

In his interview with CNN, the governor called it the 7-7-7 plan, explaining: "7 steps to 700,000 jobs over 7 years."

Rick Scott had already announced this plan on his campaign website, before becoming governor.

The number 700,000, as several reporters discovered, is not literal. Even according to Rick Scott's own estimate, there will be 665,000 jobs created by his plan. From that article 'We asked about the discrepancy and Scott says he rounded up. His reason: It sounds better to say he has “seven steps for 700,000 jobs in seven years."'

In any case, it appears definite that the budget cuts are real.

Actually, rounding to the 700,000 figure is correct and more credible.

The number 700,000 is guaranteed to only one significant digit, which makes sense for a jobs forecast many years out in the future. Which was entirely a WAG to start with.

Reporting a jobs forecast to three significant figures is just not credible.

Only in Florida can an air head like Scott become governor

Absolutely right! Is the left really critical of Scott for this?? He is accurate and only a die-hard Jimmy Carter enthusiast would want their governor so mired in the details. The governor should focus on the big picture as Scott is doing.

Yep, we are critical! It takes 3.3 billion, yes billion, out of education. We already have one of the worst school systems in the nation! This is enough to make me want to move, just to make sure my kids Have a future!

What's that $5 billion currently being spent on? Will there still be roads in Florida in 7 years?

This Rick Scott character, only cares about special interest groups!!! Why in the world would you cut hard working peoples' salaries? Or take out over $3 billion from education??? I know for a fact that those measures are NOT in the interests of the majority of Florida. Why not implement more taxes on alcohol and tobacco for example? Or is it in the interests of the people to have cheaper booze and cigarettes? "Lets go to work" - like we haven't been working already!!! Good luck getting reelected next turn... if not impeached earlier!!!

Scott is also proposing 2.8 Billion in cuts to the state pension plan. Where does he get off doing that? The governor and the legislature need to keep thier greedy little hands off the state, counties and municipalities employee's money. What right does the state have to cut my pension? The state doesn't contribute to my share of the defined benefit plan.

the governor is cutting the budget on the backs of poor people and state employees. State workers, public safety haven't had a raise in at least three years. Now he wants them to finance their retirement The rich pay little taxes in the sunshine state. He is truly their candidate screw everyone else

So let me get this straight. We give tax cuts to the wealthy who already have their needs more than met and cut benefits from the disabled, the poor and working-class families.
