Florida dog chained to fence and set on fire

Update 1/14/13: RedRover, a nonprofit animal protection organization based in Sacramento, Calif., is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for this crime.

A young dog in Riviera Beach, Fla. suffered horribly before dying earlier this week.

According to Thursday's WPEC News, someone tethered the dog, described as a one-year-old pit bull, to a fence on Monday night and doused him with some type of flammable liquid.

The helpless dog was then set on fire and left to die.

A woman who lives nearby heard the dog's pitiful cries of pain and called 911 after looking outside and observing a fire burning not far from her home.

She apparently did not realize that in the midst of the flames was a dog.

Animal control officials are calling this the worst case of animal cruelty that they have ever seen and note that the person who committed the crime is a "very sick individual."

Authorities are hoping for leads in this deplorable case of animal cruelty. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous.

Tips can also be called in to Animal Care and Control at (561) 233-1200, ext. 0.
