The former GOP presumptive nominee, Governor Willard “Mitt” Romney showed up at this evenings debate in Florida ready to rumble, aching to show the rank and file he too was adept at cracking open a few cans of rhetorical whup ass when needed.
Prior to this Evenings debate, Governor Romney hoped to stay above the fray of pedestrian political attacks on the character and fitness of one’s opponents, letting campaign surrogates like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie engage in character assassination on the Sunday cable shows.
Those who tuned in expecting an entertaining intramural political mud fest were sorely disappointed, Despite Governor Romney’s attempt to egg Speaker Gingrich into a verbal sparring match by calling him a disgraced failure as a leader, the former speaker let the bait pass, despite several attempts by Romney to get a rise out of Gingrich, the night was pretty much asnooze fest.
The consensus amongst most pundits watching the debate is the candidates must be pretty tired at this point and looking forward to a few days rest. The networks raised everyone’s expectations for an exciting knockdown drag out, blood on the floor exchange and instead got a serving of vanilla ice cream.
Florida is the first big primary, on the strength of his debate performance and victory in South Carolina Newt Gingrich has managed to edge out Governor Romney in the polls, but many Floridians have already made a choice in early voting which most agree will favor Governor Romney who enjoys an advantage in ground forces and money, though Speaker Gingrich’s campaign was given a boost when it was revealed the super Pac that supports him saw another five million dollar contribution arrive to help purchase air time in Florida which is an expensive media market.
