As the unemployed 99ers grow in number and the long term unemployed are rounding the corner to join the 99ers ranks, one state wants to take away more of what little they have now. Is this the new train of thought in unemployment benefits? This new change in thinking about the unemployed is coming from Florida, but will this be heading to the other states soon, will Connecticut, Idaho, or California be next?
Florida’s State House committee has approved the tougher restrictions on unemployment benefits. In a nut shell the new law will reduce the number of weeks to collect unemployment benefits and the benefits will get tougher to obtain in the first place, according to The Florida Independent.
Instead of the 26 weeks, the bill would shorten the duration of benefits to 20 weeks. David Daniel, a lobbyist for the “Florida Association of Professional Employer Organizations,” spoke to the committee and said, “ the goal is to make employment pay, not make unemployment pay.” This sounds great, but is this not doing the same as building a house before pouring the foundation? The employment part of this catchy little saying is not in place.
This is a slippery slope and these tough restrictions that the Florida law makers want to put into law could cause some very real problems for their states unemployed. A weekly unemployment check could mean the difference of being homeless or not.
Florida’s maximum weekly benefit is already one of the lowest in the nation at $275 a week. This is maximum, with many workers receiving half that amount as their unemployment benefits.
This bill will also reduce what employers have to pay into the state unemployment benefits, which at any other time in history may be a good thing, but not at the extent of taking food out of the mouths of the unemployed.
It appears that when the Florida State House committee approved these tougher restrictions that they had left one important component out of the equation - the lack of jobs. There are no jobs out there, certainly not enough for the millions of unemployed.
What would ever prompt them to take away weeks of the unemployment benefits from their state’s unemployed at this time in history? The unemployed will need these weeks more than ever now as the job situation has not gotten any better.
It may be hard to comprehend for some, especially the unemployed that while the nation is in the midst of
Connecticut is one of the states that pays the highest amounts in unemployment benefits with the state’s cap at $594 a week, according to the website File Under Unemployment.
Connecticut has a 26 week state unemployment benefit program, then after the states allotted amount is exhausted, the emergency federal unemployment extensions take over, allowing Connecticut’s unemployed to collect for 72 weeks.

I told you that 99ers would not get more than 99 weeks. I also told you the government would start cutting back on unemployment. The government cannot afford to keep paying people to not work.
